The APC met with Anne Gaffney, Nutrition Specialist at Elk Grove USD and current Apricot Ambassador, to discuss ideas to increase the consumption of California apricots within the school district. Elk Grove USD has a current enrollment of 58,000 and is planning for 80,000 by 2010. Their very large, modern central kitchen provides 4,000 elementary school breakfasts and 17,000 elementary school meals daily. Besides increasing their apricot usage, the district is very interested in working with the APC on possible staff development presentations as well as implementing the APC’s educational materials.
The APC held a phone meeting with Karen Candito, Director at Berkeley USD. Following this school year, Candito is leaving Berkeley to accept the position of Director of Foodservices for Santa Clara County Prison Services, where she will be responsible for foodservice in all Santa Clara County prison facilities. Candito looks forward to continuing her work with the Apricot Ambassadors and sees a tremendous opportunity for serving California apricots in the new venue.
